What is ESG and who is it really for? Alex Edmans
Friday Jul 21, 2023
Friday Jul 21, 2023
In this episode, we sit down with Alex Edmans, Professor of Finance and Academic Director of the Centre for Corporate Governance at London Business School. Alex specialises in the integration of classical financial theory and ESG, from worker pay and diversity to climate and sustainability.
His book Grow the Pie: how great companies deliver both purpose and profit won the Financial Times award for Excellence in Sustainable Finance Education, and his TED talk ‘What to trust in a post-truth world,’ has been viewed over 2 million times.
In this episode, we discuss:
Alex’s personal mission
Who we should listen to on climate?
Economics vs gut feel in ESG
Growing the pie (and taking climate seriously)
The end of ESG?
Embracing subjectivity
Stakeholders, shareholders, and getting Friedman right
Is pricing in ESG impossible?
Finding your potential
'… as we said throughout the theme of this talk, if you do something which is good for society, hopefully you will trust that the profits will follow. And I say the same thing is true for career. If you do things because you enjoy it and you think it's having a positive impact, ultimately it would lead to financial success and security later on.'
'So before coming up with a time management plan, think about what the objective of your life or career is. It's like knowing how to get to a destination. We need to know where to go to first. And so I define my personal mission statement as to use rigorous research to influence the practice of business.'
'…really important topics like climate change that does attract a lot of people and with very good intentions… People do want to contribute to it, but sometimes you might be contributing without some research behind it. And so this might lead to shooting from the hip rather than saying what is based on evidence.'

THE FUTURE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IN AFRICA - YARIV COHEN
Friday Jul 07, 2023
Friday Jul 07, 2023
If you want to find the future of clean energy, where should you look?
This week’s guest is here to tell us that tomorrow’s climate revolution is already here – and it’s Africa that is pointing the way.
It’s not a question of billions in government support, ethical consumerism, or benevolent foreign aid. This is clean technology and innovation blazing a trail as the best possible solution for energy markets in the Global South, thriving on their own merits – and leapfrogging older, western models in the process.
This episode we have the pleasure of hearing from serial entrepreneur, impact investor and global clean energy expert Yariv Cohen. As founder of Ignite Power, Yariv has brought distributed solar electricity to 2.5 million homes across sub-Saharan Africa.
It’s a fascinating story of innovation, problem-solving, and empowerment – and turns a lot of Western cleantech assumptions upside-down. For anyone who believes in the power of green energy to change lives, this is a must-listen!
Becoming a climate internationalist
What drives distributed solar in Africa?
Solar without subsidies
Infrastructure, innovation and the leapfrog effect
Impact investing in the Global South
Can Africa’s entrepreneurs save the world?
The future of carbon markets – global or local?
How to find your climate career
So today there is close to a billion people without access to power. So imagine a hut … two rooms in the middle of Africa, which is always dark. There's no floor and there's no light. And during the day, sometimes you get a little bit of light from the small windows, and during the night you burn kerosene to walk around, not to fall …
And then we come and we offer them light. We offer them a solar panel, a battery, three lights, mobile charger and a radio, and suddenly that house becomes a home. The kids come in. They're not all the time outside. They can work longer. The woman is safer in the house … And then there's the phone charging …

The Great Economists: How can their ideas help us today? - Dr Linda Yueh
Friday Jun 23, 2023
Friday Jun 23, 2023
Linda Yueh is an economist, broadcaster, and author. She is an Adjunct Professor of Economics at London Business School and a Fellow in Economics at St Edmund Hall, Oxford University.
In this episode we are fortunate enough to spend some time with Linda discussing the biggest economic challenges of our time. Chris Caldwell asks how these challenges are exacerbated in the face of climate change, including the cost of adaptation, the transition to a low-carbon economy, and we discuss the impact of climate change on inequality.
We focus on theses challenges throughout lens of Linda’s latest book: The Great Crashes: Lessons from Global Meltdowns and How to Prevent Them. She argues that financial crises are not inevitable, but they can be prevented by understanding the underlying causes and taking steps to mitigate the risks.
THE GREAT CRASHES has been praised by economists and financial journalists alike. The Financial Times called it "a timely and important book" and The Economist said it was "a valuable contribution to the debate about financial crises."
Chris also talks to Linda about her best seller, THE GREAT ECONOMISTS, and about which of those great economic thinkers would she believe is most influential on the way we deal with climate and its impact on the world economy.
Dr. Yueh is a frequent commentator on economics and finance in the media. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4, CNN, and CNBC.
"…sometimes things happen … but I think just being prepared, being open … stay curious, always wanting to learn. But also, … what made the great economist great is that they were always engaged with the big issues of the day, even if it wasn't easy, even if it was messy, even if it wasn't quantitatively as neat as their models."
"…the amount of the amount of progress with setbacks that we have seen, you know, always makes me optimistic … that we've seen challenges before, some of which have been horrific challenges … and we have come through it."

A 360° tour of the global energy markets - Eduardo Famini Silva
Friday Jun 09, 2023
Friday Jun 09, 2023
Investment bankers are consummate middle-men. The wonderful thing about being in the middle is it trains you to look at problems from all sides – and when ‘all sides’ takes you from Europe to South America to Canada to Asia, you develop a truly 360° perspective. In this episode, we survey global ESG trends from great heights with the help of one of the world’s leading green energy bankers, Eduardo Famini Silva.
Eduardo Famini Silva is Director of Renewables and Utilities at RBC Capital Markets.
A specialist in M&A and financing in the energy sector, he has over fifteen years of experience working across the world – from Asia to the Americas – with an increasing focus on clean energy markets
Some of our highlights include:
oil to renewables – evolving a career the natural way
is ESG inherently utilitarian?
How clean energy can solve the trilemma (for good!)
green M&A: a dance of growth and consolidation
decarbonisation vs high interest rates: which is winning today?
US vs EU: is a green trade war brewing?
hydrogen: is there a future?
energy justice: co-investing in social outcomes
an optimistic banker’s view of the future
'... So I would hope that in ten years... developed markets would have renewables and other energy transition technologies established as mainstream as an investable class that not only the most risk takers can bet on, but that everyone can bet on, including the most conservative investors...'

Creating a viable hydrogen economy - JULIO DAL POZ
Friday Jun 02, 2023
Friday Jun 02, 2023
Julio Dal Poz. He is a true veteran of the industry: from his beginnings as an engineer on deep-water drills; through stints as analyst and consultant for upstream explorers and energy markets (including a brief covering digital tech and transformation in the sector); to his years at Equinor, where he finished up head of the Advisory Board for Strategy, working on the clean energy transition. Today, he turns his experience and expertise towards helping energy firms design their own transition strategies for our future world, at FTI Consulting.
Is there a serious future for hydrogen in our sustainable fuels mix? And how would we transition from blue hydrogen as a by-product of hydrocarbons to truly green, sustainable and affordable hydrogen production?
Chris Caldwell of United Renewables and host of The Conversations on Climate podcast talks with industry veteran Julio Dal Poz.
Brazilian-born Julio Dal Poz started his career in deepwater oil drilling as an engineer. Through many twists and turns – working across Norway, Brazil, the UK, and the Middle East - he is now a consultant advising traditional energy firms on making the transition to clean energy with FTI Consulting.
After a spell as an energy specialist at Accenture, He spent the key years between the Financial Crisis and the Paris Agreement as Senior Strategy Advisor at Equinor, where he saw first-hand what change really looks like at arguably the world’s most forward-thinking oil major. He is a frequent keynote speaker and panelist at global energy events worldwide.
Julio is a great partner for this conversation, combining his deep experience with a willingness to question common conceptions about the fossil fuel industry,

TOM GOSLING - What If ESG Targets Are Actually Causing More Harm Than Good?
Friday May 19, 2023
Friday May 19, 2023
This episode's guest is Tom Gosling. After nearly twenty-five years at PriceWaterhouseCoopers as an expert on executive pay and board policy, he set out to create a new portfolio career with ESG at the centre.
He is currently Executive Fellow in the Department of Finance at London Business School, and holds fellowships, advisory and consulting positions at a number of other major organisations, including the FCA and The Purposeful Company.
Tom bridges high-level experience and deep thinking across a fascinating range of subjects, making this a conversation not to be missed.
Are CEOs really overpaid
Do ESG Targets work
Are stock markets too short-termist
Is climate change truly a 'shareholder value' concern
Do we need to get business out of politics - or the opposite
'...So what's absolutely clear is that individuals can't solve this by themselves. And I think it's wrong to entirely put the emphasis on individuals. And that is part of the reason why I haven't taken an excessively harsh approach to this...But on the other hand, I think the idea that Governments have got to solve this, say, let's just wait for governments to act is kind of for the birds as well. That's not how politics works...'

This episode's guests are Giorgia Granata and Eli Khrapko. After excelling as a haute couture fashion director and air force pilot (who flew missions in Afghanistan) the journey to developing an eco-friendly intimate cleansing product may not have been an obvious one.
But Giorgia and Eli met whilst studying for their MBAs at London Business School and there they came up with the idea of a truly biodegradable, organic alternative to wet wipes, and a herald of the next stage of green consumer goods.
wype, the brand, has gone from strength to strength, and Giorgia and Eli tell their story with refreshing frankness.
Join us for a feisty and sometimes controversial conversation with Chris Caldwell.
Whatever happened to the bidet? The secret – and misogynistic – history of wet wipes
Disposability, flushability and greenwashing: don’t believe the marketing hype!
Taking the fear out of feminine healthcare messaging
Why sustainable options will never hit cost parity (and that’s fine)
Bootstrapping: the halo slips
Humour as taboo-busting tool
Should we laugh at climate change? Wow, did we disagree on this!
Is it time to give up on green marketing? (yep, another disagreement!)
Finding community and brand ambassadors in unlikely places
'...and so I thought, Is there a way that we can create an eco-friendly alternative that provides obviously the sensation that people are seeking, but without the kind of environmental damage? And so that's when we kind of came up with this natural gel that affords the same kind of moisture and cleansing power, but without the drawbacks that wet wipes are having on the environment. And our intuition has been proven right, not only by the performance of the company in time, but also by the fact that the problem has been increasing despite the efforts of the authorities, water companies and everyone else...So it's definitely something that we're very passionate about....'
'...I think there's absolutely a responsibility on businesses to have sustainable practices and to, you know, be thinking about that through every single part of the decision making...'

Friday Apr 21, 2023
In the highly anticipated Episode 1 of Season 2 of Conversations on Climate, Christopher Caldwell, CEO, Entrepreneur, and host of the show, sits down with François Ortalo-Magné. Together, they discuss the latest insights and trends in business sustainability, how companies can thrive in a world increasingly concerned about the environment, and, of course the future of London Business School.
There’s only one person to talk to about the future of LBS: the Dean himself. Since the appointment of François Ortalo-Magné in 2017, he has guided the school through the pandemic, Black Lives Matter, and the explosion of ESG across the business world.
Today he is fully focussed on driving LBS into the future with the Forever Forward campaign, raising £200m to transform the school into a 21st-century powerhouse of research, innovation, diversity and world-beating education.
This conversation turns into a one-hour masterclass in leadership, impact, and the art of balancing tradition with transformation. It’s a must listen for any business leader.
How can the school maximise this positive impact – and just what is ‘impact squared’?
What roles do its research, teaching programmes, and alumni play in shaping the landscape of tomorrow?
And how should this august institution hold true to its traditions of academic freedom, rigour and excellence, whilst adapting to a rapidly-changing world?
'... I tell our students, don't come if you're not curious and open to be inspired to a different perspective on your self in the world...'
'...the message of the moment is: ask yourself as you go on with the rest of your life, whom do you serve?'

The future of work in a Net-Zero world with Lynda Gratton
Friday Mar 17, 2023
Friday Mar 17, 2023
This isn’t your father’s workplace anymore.
Not since the industrial revolution has the world of work undergone a such radical change, at such breakneck speed, as we are seeing today.
Technology, the pandemic and decarbonisation are completely re-writing the rules across every industry – and there will be blood.
So how can you – as a leader and in your own career – ride these changes?
To find out, we turned to someone who has literally written the book on the future of work – Professor Lynda Gratton, LBS and WEF superstar and our guest on this episode of Conversations on Climate.
Lynda Gratton is Professor of Management Practice in Organisational Behaviour at London Business School, where she teaches the ever-popular ‘Future of Work’ and ‘Strategy in Transforming Companies’ programmes.
Beyond academia, she is a Council chair at the World Economic Forum, founder of Strategy consultancy HSM Advisory, and the author of numerous award-winning books including Redesigning Work and The 100 Year Life.
"You've got to change the way that you live. And I think helping people realise that they're going to live longer, that automation is going to make a huge impact on our lives...both in terms of robots and artificial intelligence...that knowledge is it helps people up-skill and re-skill..."
"...I certainly love corporations a lot more than I love politicians...and political leaders at the moment. Because I think, you know, the difference between political leaders and corporate leaders is the selection process to get to the top of Shell or BP or Equinor is rather different from the selection process to become a prime minister or the the leader of a country...."

Will ESG survive the next recession?
Should we divest from all fossil fuels?
Can sustainability truly coexist with profitability?
We all have our own unique ideas of what ESG really means in this way. But when you are part of a team managing $1.5 trillion of other people’s money, the stakes get higher. A lot higher.
This is the reality for Cathrine de Coninck-Lopez, the guest on our latest episode of Conversations on Climate. Fortunately for us, it’s a pressure that has forged some very sharp thinking on the problems of sustainable investment today.
Cathrine de Coninck-Lopez is Global Head of ESG at Invesco, one of the world’s biggest asset managers.
She leads the ESG function with teams across asset classes and geographies, responsible for integration, research, engagement, and innovation.
There is so much behind-the-scenes insight here – and we really went after some of the big debates.
ESG: different things to different people
What does a Global Head of ESG actually do all day?
Connecting sustainability to fiduciary duty
To find your flavour of ESG, audit your own values
The next big opportunities in ESG: biodiversity, human rights, and impact investing
Divestment, ethics and financial performance – do we need more hard lines?
Does passive ESG investment make sense
Why you’ve got to rate your rating system…and it all comes back to values again
"I would say the first thing is make your money matter, right? So think about what you are, what you care about, whether the disclosures on whatever product you're looking at matches those values. And that's how I would just be really critical about what you're investing in."
"...first they ignore you, then they fight you and then you win....I genuinely believe we are winning. So I am excited about how ESG is just becoming part of the standard way of operating."
